Introduction

Argument and Critical Thinking teaches these methods and applies them to real-life arguments, both written and spoken. It is thus an introduction to communication and applied logic.

Objectives

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

 

  • Identify the main issue of an argument.
  • Identify premises of an argument.
  • Identify the main conclusion of an argument and demonstrate an understanding of its significance.
  • Identify value assumptions in an argument.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the difference between effective and ineffective arguments.
  • Examine different types of arguments and identify some common fallacies.
  • Identify unclear and emotive language in an argument.
  • Conduct library research as appropriate;
